Spring has Sprung
I did an incredible ride with Capital Hill Bikes this morning.
If you are in the DC area, check out Capital Hill Bikes' summer riding schedule, and ride....
I am extremely tired, extremely content, and extremely grateful today!
Consider spending time with people who require you to go to the next level, and see how you will soar; I'm riding with The Big Boys now.
This is the day......Rejoice and Be Glad!

The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
Many books have the message of a person needing to take a journey, literally or figuratively, in order to do some type of self-discovery.
I have been discussing The Odyssey with my students. We read that The Odyssey, which was written around 1200 B.C, is considered to be the original story of a person who takes a journey in order to find himself. It is believed that many stories are patterned after The Odyssey: The Wizard of Oz, Moby Dick, The Hobbit, Star Wars, Song of Solomon, The Awakening and so on.
Well, The Remains of the Day is about an English butler, Steven, who is offered the opportunity, by his boss, to take a journey.
Steven decides to take a road journey to go and visit Miss Kenton, the former housekeeper of the house where he currently works. Steven received a letter from Miss Kenton, and from the letter, he believes that she is in an unhappy marriage, and he decides to go and visit her and offer her the opportunity to return to her former employer.
On his journey, Steven reflects on his life and comes to the realization that he never really pursued anything that he wanted; he always did what was considered "the right thing to do" for a boss whom he thought was a honorable man.
He realizes that his boss was not the honorable man that he thought that he was, Steven stated that his boss "chose a path in life, it proved to be a misguided one, but there, he chose it, he can say that at least. As for myself, I cannot even claim that....I can not even say that I made my own mistakes. Really - one has to ask oneself -what dignity is there in that?" (P172)
However, by the end of the book, I got the feeling that Steven would return home a different man with the realization that the rest of his life could be the best of his life; "The evening's the best part of the day." (P.173)
People, sometimes we must take a journey, and sometimes we must take it alone. The journey or the alone time may not be something that we desire, but for whatever reason, it is sometimes forced upon us and that is where true growth can take place.
I have learned to relax into my journey and trust my creator...
Let's not get to the end of our lives and realize that we have not lived!
This is an awesome book that is well-written, and it gives its readers a lot to think about..
Seize the Day!!!!

April 4th, 1968
Today marks the 45th anniversary of the death of Dr. King.
Not sure how we got on the topic, but last week, my mom and I were talking about the day that Dr. King was killed.
My mom spoke of how bad she felt when she found out that the The King was gone.......
Today, join me in reflecting on The King and his legacy.
Long Live The King!

Brown E or Brownie
My students know that I try not to eat junk food. If I even look at some of the junk food that they bring into the classroom, they remind me that "You don't eat that." They definitely keep me honest.
During study hall, the students asked "Don't you want one of Michael's brownies?"
I knew that this was a trick, because they never encourage me to eat things that I should not eat. They kept pressuring me so I said "Michael, I'll try a brownie," and he sat this on my desk:
Brown E! You get it....
Then, he pulled this out:
You got to love the kids......
Brown E or Brownie?
(Names were changed to protect the innocent!)

"To be Great is to be Misunderstood." Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Grand Canyon |
"Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance
Some of my favorite people are the transcendentalist: Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Margaret Fuller, Emily Dickerson.
When I taught 11th grade English, I would spend quite a bit of time on the transcendentalist, because they spoke to my heart.
Transcendentalist Beliefs
1. The spiritual unity of all forms of being with God, Humanity, and Nature all sharing a universal soul, the oversoul2. The inherent goodness (divinity!) of Man and Nature
3. The value of individualism
4. The belief that the natural world is symbolic of the spirit world
5. The "Lemon Pie" theory (to know the part is to know the whole)
6. That Society is the source of corruptive, distracting materialism
7. That Man is naturally good, even divine, because of his Divine Intellect
8. That Nature is inherently good because it is symbolic of the spirit (God)
9. That God, the Oversoul, is the universal soul that permeates all being (much like "the Force")
I spend a lot of time pondering the above quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson from Self Reliance. The idea that to be great is to be misunderstood always makes my heart leap, and I always wonder if some people shy away from their greatness, because they do not want to be misunderstood.
But, we must ask ourselves "What is wrong with being misunderstood if we are following our own inherent goodness, spirit, nature?"
"To be Great is to be Misunderstood," and it is All Right.....
Happy Monday My People!
