Favor, Awesome Friends, or Both!

Nancy and Me!

I am honored to have some awesome people in my life, and I truly appreciate that they think of me!

Because of Nancy, Berhane and his wife, three more of Nancy's friends, and I were given the really awesome opportunity to visit the grounds of The White House in order to see The President take off to do the very important work that he does.

I felt sooo honored to see the Commander in Chief off, and I felt like I was representing all of the Africans who were turned into slaves, all of the people of the Civil Rights era who are not here to see this, my mom who really wants to see this man in person, and my dad whom I know would be glued to the TV all day, everyday, following every one of President Obama's moves.

When President Obama walked out to board Marine One, his helicopter, I felt such pride.

He came out, waved at us, got on the helicopter, and took off......

Everyone, about seventy-five to a hundred people, were silent after he took off, but I said something like "This is awesome."

Eventually, people started to clap.

We took a few pictures after that and left.

I've been somewhere between disbelief, total joy, complete pride, and a whole bunch of other emotions,

AND

it just happens to be Black History month, and We Are Doing It!

Long Live President Barack Hussein Obama.......

Was this God's favor, or do I just have awesome friends who always think of me, or both?

I'm going with the idea that I'm highly favored with some of the best friends.......

Favor is running me down!

Here are pictures from my White House visit:

Ego Tripping...

I totally trust the greatest trainer in the world, Berhane. I follow and do everything that he tells me to do, and he has not led me astray yet!

Lately, he has been telling me that I need to cut back on my long distance runs; it's tough on the joints. (What?)

I love long distance running. I no longer get that runner's high from anything under five miles. When I run six to ten miles, I feel mentally good. But when I run ten or above, I feel invincible even though my knees may be a bit sore afterwards. I recover quickly!  (Ego Tripping!)

He has been telling me to get the ego out of it, and do what is good for my body. (What???)

He's recommending sprints where I run as fast as I can around the track, then do a slower run around the track and constantly try to improve my time. He says that because my heart rate will go up and down, I will see greater results. (I absolutely believe this, but.....)

That's not what I want to do; I want to meet my running group every Saturday and RUN! (Ego Tripping!)

I love getting up early on a Saturday morning to run; I'm not sure what I will do with my Saturday mornings if I do not run. (Ego Tripping!)

I do trust Berhane when it comes to my health, but I am not sure what I will do with this new information. (Ego Tripping!)

People, offer me some advice please, because I think that I may be ego tripping!

Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why)
by Nikki Giovani

I was born in the congo
I walked to the fertile crescent and built
the sphinx
I designed a pyramid so tough that a star
that only glows every one hundred years falls
into the center giving divine perfect light
I am bad

I sat on the throne
drinking nectar with allah
I got hot and sent an ice age to europe
to cool my thirst
My oldest daughter is nefertiti
the tears from my birth pains
created the nile
I am a beautiful woman

I gazed on the forest and burned
out the sahara desert
with a packet of goat's meat
and a change of clothes
I crossed it in two hours
I am a gazelle so swift
so swift you can't catch me

For a birthday present when he was three
I gave my son hannibal an elephant
He gave me rome for mother's day
My strength flows ever on

My son noah built new/ark and
I stood proudly at the helm
as we sailed on a soft summer day
I turned myself into myself and was
jesus
men intone my loving name
All praises All praises
I am the one who would save

I sowed diamonds in my back yard
My bowels deliver uranium
the filings from my fingernails are
semi-precious jewels
On a trip north
I caught a cold and blew
My nose giving oil to the arab world
I am so hip even my errors are correct
I sailed west to reach east and had to round off
the earth as I went
The hair from my head thinned and gold was laid
across three continents

I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal
I cannot be comprehended except by my permission

I mean...I...can fly
like a bird in the sky...

Reflecting......

Her: Don't you ever yell at me again!

Me: Did I yell at you in front of the class?

Her: Don't you do that again!

Me: When did this happen? (I'm completely confused!)

Her: When I asked you about a student's grade, you told me to look it up. You were right, but I did not like your tone. You were very angry. It was very unprofessional. (Her back is to me now, and she is walking out the door.)

Me: I'm sorry! (I finally remembered what she was talking about.)

I've thought about this incident a lot, but I'm not sure what I should do next..

Should I explain that I put a lot of effort into making sure that my students' grades are always current and online so that she and anyone else can view them? Should I explain that I was not angry but irritated, because she asked me this before, and I think that I gave her the same response? Should I explain that her saying "it was very unprofessional" really got under my skin, because how dare she tell me how she feels about my professionalism when I really don't care how she feels about it? Or, should I let it go.........

Happy Wednesday People!!!

Courage...We already have it!

(Random thoughts about courage. You've been warned!)

The Wizard of Oz

A few weeks ago, I was honored with the opportunity to hear Maya Angelou have a conversation with Johnnetta Cole. Maya talked about courage, and courage has been on my mind every since.

I have thought a lot about the Lion from The Wizard of Oz. The lion was going to the Wizard to ask for courage. The lion "attacks so quickly that the victim does not get any time to protect itself. It attacks the big animals like wild buffaloes and giraffe from behind and then tears them apart with the help of its paws and teeth. Due to this quickness and power, it is known as The King of the jungle."  (http://www.thegeminigeek.com/)

So, why would a Lion, who is known as the King of the Jungle, need to ask for courage?

Did the Lion not know that he is The King of The Jungle? If he did not know, why did he not know?

A lion may not be born with courage, just like many of us, but once he kills a small animal, and then a medium animal, his courage should start to grow.

Whenever we take that first step, the courage may not be there, but as we take more and more steps, our courage should start to grow.

For instance, I have been teaching for about fifteen years and every time that I get up to teach a class, I always feel a bit of nervousness and have some doubt, but as the years progress, my courage continues to grow and grow and grow.......

Maya Angelou stated that people like her, some of our American icons, had to develop their courage; It was not always present...

It takes the first step and courage for a person to leave a relationship that is not working, for a young man or woman to leave their home to become a soldier, for a person to change their entire diet, to publicly confess love for a person when you do not know how that person feels about you, to not react, to run one mile, two miles, a half or full marathon, to give up coke, to give up fastfood, to have a courageous conversation, to finish a degree, to bury somebody whom you love with your whole heart etc.

We already have the courage; we just need to develop it by taking the first step.

It took one step and courage for Nelson Mandela to get out of prison and forgive the people who imprisoned him. It took one step and courage for Dr. King to leave his house when he knew that death was lurking everywhere. It took one step and courage for Southern me, who had never been in an inner city school before, to teach in inner city Detroit. It took one step and courage for my Dad to sue Alabama Power Company for Discrimination when he could have been fired, and he had ten mouths to feed. It took one step and courage for my mother, in her 70s, to decide that she would start a new life in a new town. It took one step and courage for many of you to decide that you would give up something this month when a whole lot may be working against you.

However, I have not heard one person, who made that first step, say that he/she regretted taking that first step......

I am thinking about the people of The Montgomery Boycott who had to be concerned with how they would get to work if they did not ride the bus. I know there were some Black people who rode that bus because of the fear of how they would get to work, to the grocery store, across town to shop. BUT, there were others who took that first step and a neighbor dropped by to walk to work with them, and the next day someone borrowed a car to pick them up, and the next day there was a private taxi service that came to pick them up, and their courage grew and grew.

To try and stop the boycott, Whites turned to violence, but by this time, the people's courage was so high until they "would not let nothing turn them around."

After a year of courageously not riding the buses, the buses were finally integrated. However, the trouble did not stop: buses were shot at, and homes were bombed. However, the scare tactics no longer had an effect, because the people's courage had grown.

This is no different than the small things, compared to segregating a bus system, that we are trying to give up. The first day may be difficult, but each day our courage will get stronger. If there are people in your home who are trying, consciously or unconsciously, to stop you; eventually, they will be no match for your courage, and they may even join you. My Dad use to say "If people can't beat you; they will join you."

Just like the Lion, we do not need to ask for courage, we already have it......

I'm developing my courage everyday by taking the first step.....

Peace Like A River by Leif Enger

I have this student who has the calmest spirit. I can imagine her getting angry, but I can not imagine her having an outburst. She is the type of student who can email me on Wednesday to read a college essay that is due on Friday or ask me to write a college recommendation that is due the next day. She just has this way with people. Oh, what we will do for children!

The class was discussing the idea that all of the books that we read for school are sad or depressing. I thought about that idea. I do agree with them, but most of the sad stories are well written and show the full growth of most of the characters just like life. In life, we have sad and/or bad things happen, but we overcome them. They were not buying this idea at all.

So, I asked them to recommend a happy book that is worthy to be studied in school, and I would read the book and consider teaching it.

After class one day, the calm spirited student whom I mentioned earlier, told me that she had a happy book that she wanted me to read and consider teaching. I wrote the title down, and I read the book. The book is Peace Like A River by Leif Enger, and I hated every moment of reading this book, literally.

As I was reading it, I was emailing her saying "Are you sure that I am reading the right book?" "Do you think that this is a happy book?" And, I talked about her pretty badly in class... I told her and the class that this book made me want to jump out of a window. They got a heart felt laugh out of that.

Peace Like a River is told from the perspective of the main character, Reuben Land. Reuben is telling this story as a adult, but he is reflecting back on his childhood and all of the miraculous things that happened.

Reuben's brother, Davy, kills two guys who have been harassing their family, and he breaks out of prison and is on the run. Reuben, with his sister and father, leave their hometown after Davy escapes prison. The dad meets this lady and falls in love. The dad and Reuben were both shot by a crazy man. The dad dies, and Reuben survives. The brother Davy is never caught. And, they all live happily ever after. (Really!)

This book has a faith undertone and tries to convey a message about miracles. The Dad performs miracles through Christ and even gives up his life so that Reuben may live.

However, this book is written in a fashion that is very anti-climatic. There is NO beautiful language. It does not make the reader want to read on. There were some parts of this book that I thought could have been completely left out, because they did not add to the story at all. There were absolutely no high points to this story. It was like doing a long bike ride on a long, wooded trail with absolutely no change of scenery. (Boring....)

Needless to say, I like books that are thought provoking and that give me with something to think about, and this book did not do that at all...Sorry students, but we still have not found a happy school book yet!
